not like it used to be.

newton is not like it used to be. i grew up in newton and moved away for a long time. i moved back, and even though some of the small town charm is still here. i've noticed an influx in crime. the drugs are out of control in this town. i have not read in the paper of any huge drug arrests like i used to. i've read a lot of robberies in the paper. more than i ever remember. i've read about violent crimes, maybe i used to read some, but it seems weekly these crimes are happening in this quaint little town. i no longer feel safe to live here, and i will not raise children in or near this town. it's sad because i loved newton my entire life, but i dont recognize it anymore. it no longer feels like my

Housing, property taxes, communting
- 9/23/2006
We have lived in Newton for the last 30+ years and things have changed quite a bit. Sussex county was an alternative to Morris, Passaic and Bergen counties, but this is no longer the case. Housing costs are inflated and property taxes are thru the roof. I pay over 8,000 a year for a 5 bedroom ranch on 2.5 acres. Most if not all new home contruction are the mini mansions. Adding up all my expenses unless you have a six figure income you probably can't afford to live here. Don't let anyone tell you the commute's not bad. We are ten miles from Route 15 and 20 miles from I-80 and it takes around and hour to drive 38 miles. Rush hour starts around 6AM to 9AM. The evening rush is even worse. There are no jobs to speak of in town unless you want to be a slave for walmart or home depot. There still are bargains out here I'm sure but you'll probably have to go off the beaten path. The pace of this town also has become to hectic, I like laid-back. When driving, nobody ever honked their horn at

Sussex County
- 4/21/2006
If your going to live in Northern New Jersey, Sussex County is your best option. Hudson County is the most overcrowded area of the entire state. Passaic and Essex Counties have a lot of crime and urban decay. Bergan and Morris Counties are very expensive. Sussex County is an excellent alternative. It has low crime rates, low population density, an attractive, rural atmosphere and reasonable housing costs relative to its neighboring counties. Newton, the capitol seat, is a very nice small town and has most of the conveniences that you need. The only downside may be the need to commute a ways to work, but overall it is a livable place. I grew up in the Northeast, but moved to the Northwest because it is a much better place to raise a
